Hong Kong skyline adds a new multi-billion dollar addition! (just not where you though it would)

New World Development revealed plans for a US$2.58 billion mixed-use space at Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) SkyCity complex called: 11 Skies.

The development will be Hong Kong’s largest retail, dining and entertainment hub totaling with 70% of space allocated and dedicated to retail and dining, while the remaining will include state of the art housing over 800 stores and 120 dining concepts.

Inspired even by Singapore’s Jewel Changi retailtainment complex, 11 Skies aims to connect tourists and locals across the region, as Hong Kong’s newly developed Greater Bay Area. As stated:

"Located next to the HKIA, The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Tuen Mun-Chep Lap Kok Link, the destination will benefit from a high volume of passengers who travel via the airport where a total of 71.5 million tourists annually were recorded before the Covid-19 crisis and in easy reach of 72 million people residing in the Greater Bay Area."

11 Skies will be the first shopping destination in Asia to combine retail, dining and entertainment alongside wealth management and wellness services. Adrian Cheng, CEO, New World Development and Founder of K11 Group said in a statement that 11 Skies will be

“a game-changer for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area”.

“...It is the first project that comprehensively combines retail, dining, entertainment, together with wellness and wealth management in one complete ecosystem for people in Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area and the rest of the world.” Within the residential and tourist shopping area of Tung Chung nearby the airport, the new development is set to open in phases starting in 2022 and run up to 2025.

11 Skies will neighbour Swire Properties’ decade-old Citygate Outlets which recently underwent refurbishment and expansion with an extended wing for new luxury and lifestyle brands.

Despite the utter disappearance of tourists in Hong Kong over the past year and a half in Hong Kong due to social unrest, lock-down and health precautions related to Covid-19, local developers have been amping up interest with hopes to attract locals into journeying to the outskirts of the city for a new experiences and activities (like one of its main features: a BTS-themed cable car ride at the Ngong Ping 360, in partnership with Fila!)

The rundown:

Located next to the HKIA, The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Tuen Mun-Chep Lap Kok Link, the destination will benefit from a high volume of passengers who travel via the airport where a total of 71.5 million tourists annually were recorded before the Covid-19 crisis and in easy reach of 72 million people residing in the Greater Bay Area. Without a doubt, the stability of the region and the strategy behind the GBA project is pivotal for the completion and success of the future of this amazing project.
